MORE ABOUT ME:
As the oldest of six children, I grew up in a good Catholic household in Massachusetts and attended Catholic school for most of my life.  I attended Dean College for two years and then transferred out to Franciscan University of Steubenville for three more years.  Though I grew up in good, practicing Catholic family, I had a lot of conversion and spiritual growth at Franciscan University.  It is here that I grew immensely in my spiritual life and knowledge of the faith.  I received a deep desire and zeal to love and serve God.  I also learned what my gifts and talents were and grew in my desire to use them for the benefit of others.  After my faith was shaken by Jehovah’ Witnesses in 1997, I learned how to explain and defend my faith, transforming me into the speaker and evangelist I am today.  I have spent the last ten years studying and growing in the Catholic faith, as well as teaching it to others through youth ministry, parish work, professional speaking, and more.  Six years ago, I moved to Meriden, and five months ago, I entered into the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.  From there, I moved to Milford, CT. where I currently reside.  My wife, Katherine is also a very practicing Catholic who loves God with her whole heart, and we take our vocation very seriously. She works as a professional animator for Disney and Nickelodeon making kids cartoons for TV.
My interests include sports, games, hiking, fishing and other outdoor activities.  I have a gift for memorization and have learned all the capitals of every country in the world.  I am currently in the process of learning all of the popes in chronological order.  My biggest interest lies in my faith life.  I love to pray, go to Mass and to adoration, and to read spiritual books.  I enjoy learning as much as possible about God and my Catholic Faith, as well as bringing Him to as many people as He allows me reach.

Our Youth Group Programs
For over 25 years, the St. John’s Youth Group has been an active and vibrant part of parish life. This high school age group provides a unique opportunity for teens to grow personally and spiritually through knowing and serving the Lord Jesus Christ and each other in a loving community of faith. In the process group members support each other in a respectful and accepting environment where great friends are made! Traditions of service to the parish community and love for the liturgy are prevalent along with a variety of activities and events throughout the year. CLUB 678 is a group for middle school age youth, meeting monthly, and both groups are headed by the Youth Minister, Steve Pond.

The 5:00 Sunday evening Mass is the primary setting where all teens are encouraged to come together for worship. Group members serve at the altar, are Eucharistic ministers and take up the collection. Teens also sing and play in the worship music band. Following Mass, high school teens gather for dinner in the Conservatory and then the regular weekly meeting from 6:30 to 8:00 in the youth room. These meetings are designed to foster Catholic spiritual growth and learning about life combined with the fun of building true bonds of friendship in the Lord. CLUB 678 meetings lean toward fun, fellowship and helping the less fortunate during Advent and in the spring. Come and see!

Throughout the year time is allotted for planning all the worthwhile, rewarding activities in which both youth groups participate. These involve acts of charity and service for others such as the Cancer Walk and Leaf Raking for the Elderly, fundraising projects for the group’s budget like the Whale of a Sale, and worship/liturgy events such as the Living Stations of the Cross and the Living Nativity. The support of parents and volunteers is crucial to the success of these activities and contributes to a strong feeling of community in the parish and the sharing of faith.

Lending a Hand?

It's a privilege to share in the vision of seeing young people carry on the faith of the Church and be firmly grounded in a vital calling from God. We are blessed when God uses us to make it happen. The commitment can be tailored to your needs; whatever works for you. There are certain times when another adult helper/leader is really needed. You can do what feels comfortable to you, from chaperoning to helping lead a meeting. Bigger commitments of time and energy, such as going on a mission trip, require more prayer and consideration before taking on, but the resulting payoff is bigger, too! It's fulfilling the vision! You would be very welcome and training is available. It requires Virtus training. Please contact Steve Pond or Father McGrath to discuss.

Please contact BRYAN MERCIER (203-662-1217) if you are interested in finding out more about youth groups at St. John’s!
